Although there are many precursors, email, as we know it today, is credited to a computer engineer named Ray Tomlinson who, in 1971, was hired by the United States Department of Defense to better a primitive form of email that allowed users of the same computer to send text messages to another by putting the message in the user’s directory.
It ran on something called ARPANET, an Internet precursor for the military and educational institutions. Tomlinson wanted to get messages to send between users of different computers. To get it to work he coded the “@” sign into the message program, a simple choice since it means ‘at’ and he wanted to send a message to someone ‘at’ a specific computer.
It became so widely used that in two years 75 percent of ARPANET’s traffic was email. Soon various companies in the 80’s began to use it internally. As the Internet grew and became commercial in the 90’s, so email became commercialised and has become the most widely used and most obvious form of communication.
Email allows us to connect instantly and without hassle. It’s incredibly reliable – no mail getting lost in the post. It’s incredibly quick and has a wide variety of uses – business, a chat with friends, or a message of love to the family. It’s made our daily tasks so much quicker, easier, and more convenient.
Unlike before, now you don’t need to spend an hour at the post office every day getting your letters sent. You don’t need to wait for the postman to arrive. You don’t need to phone around looking for someone, leaving them messages, hoping they will call back. Simply send them an email and what you needed to communicate has been communicated.
It’s hard now to think of a world without email. One wonders if Tomlinson ever thought it would become what it is today and how it’s evolving.
